Instead, Mary goes below stairs, hair scandalously undone, to ask the servants if any of them posted a letter to Mr. Maybe he should break out the Ouija board and ask her. Matthew thinks the letter is a hoax, as Lavinia died too quickly to inform her father of the status of the engagement. Swire knew that Matthew and Lavinia's engagement was over when she died, but he wants him to have the family money anyway. He doesn't want to read it, so Mary does. Meanwhile, Matthew receives a letter from the deceased Mr. Cora tries to comfort her daughter, but it is clear Edith needs time. Edith is upset, but the Dowager Countess thinks it's for the best.Įdith is crushed and runs home to mourn for the life she could have had and to tell her married sisters to go be happy somewhere else. When she reaches his side he decides it's the perfect time to tell her he can't go through with the wedding. He can't even turn to look at Edith as she walks down the aisle. Downton has already been through two daughters' weddings, what's a third?īut Mary has to admit that while she doesn't really like everything her sister has done over the years (Remember the letter to the Turkish embassy in season 1?), she's happy for her on this day. (For the record, Edith's wedding gown is much prettier than Mary's.)Įdith and Sir Anthony's wedding isn't treated by the show, or its characters, with the same buildup as Mary's wedding.
